  3. depart from the centre of this shared experience, they would 
  4. collapse at once, by losing all hold on our feelings.

  6.      It is true, of course, that ads use the most basic and 
  7. tested human experience of a community in grotesque ways. 
  8. They are as incongruous, if looked at consciously, as the 
  9. playing of ‚ÄúSilver Threads among the Gold‚Äù as music for a strip-
  10. tease act. But ads are carefully designed by the Madison 
  11. Avenue frogmen-of-the-mind for semiconscious exposure. Their 
  12. mere existence is a testimony, as well as a contribution, to the 
  13. somnambulistic state of a tired metropolis.

  15.      After the Second War, an ad-conscious American army 
  16. officer in Italy noted with misgiving that Italians could tell you
